IT-depression also affects CBL’s operating result

RTF Article in rtf format
Still the core business remains stable

Muenster, March 12th 2003 – The fiscal year of Communication by light – Gesellschaft für optische Kommunikationssysteme mbH (CBL) was closed on January 31st recording a turnover of 6,3 million Euros. Compared to the previous year this resembles a drop in sales which is well below 20 percent. „Considering the current situation of the IT market and the preceding boom years 1999 until 2001 we were expecting this develoment.“ Dr.-Ing. Hermann Lentke, managing director of CBL, comments on the turnover. „A positive aspect is the fact that this sharp economic slowdown does not concern our core business which is the development, sales and service of radio link systems but only the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) branch.“ Thus the result compares to CBL‘s evaluations of the general market development and therefore is no cause for excessive concern. The fiscal year of the Czech subsidiary CBL s.r.o. also met the forecasts. The turnover mounts to 1.6 million Euros, which resembles a significant increase.

Radio link business remains stable

The turnover of development, sales, installation and service of radio link systems stays stable besides slight fluctuations within little percentage points that are usual. Products like the AirLaser IP100 with integrated backup and new radio link systems launched with CeBIT 2002 are already established in the market. CBL is still one of few providers in the market that offers wireless point-to-point connections. CBL supplies its customers with the entire range of wireless communication such as small wireless LAN solutions, optical link systems and radio link systems with high perfomance and broad reach. Thus the customer can chose to receive all services such as the initial consulting and later on multi-stage maintenance of the units from one hand – with the certainty that the solution will be designed to fit his needs.

OEM-Products are regressive

In consequence of the unfavourable start into the fiscal year 2002/2003 the drop of sales of OEM-products was significant. The economic slowdown forced many customers of our OEM partners to refrain from investigations into the IT business. A stimulation of the business by the end of the year could not balance the slowdown despite occuring indications of an economic pick-up. „We are optimistic that this year we will no report any further economic slowdowns in the OEM section,“ claims Dr Lentke. „We even hope to achieve a slight increase also based upon new developments and improvements of excisting products for our partners.“

Reinforced commitment for CBL´s FiberMultiplier systems

For a reincrease of sales CBL counts on its FiberMultiplier systems. „Up to now we have been producing fiber optic systems in most cases only for one single partner. Launching improved FiberMultiplier with the Systems 2000 was the first step towards a new productline.“ With these words Dr Lentke introduces the upcoming proprietary development. „By the use of our modular setup with single interface modules and the CWDM-Multiplexers we can offer our customers individual solutions that are available piece by piece.“ Thus CBL strengthens its marketing for those solutions with direct marketing activities and an updated presentation on the CeBIT 2003. „Compared to our competitiors our fiber optic products are well positioned and offer considerable potential. Now we are enhancing our market presence.“ This is the goal for the upcoming year.
